13-The Rule of Four by Ian Caldwell & Dustin Thomason

Tom & Paul are friends and room mates at Princeton. For his senior thesis Paul is trying to decode and uncover the hidden message in a book written during the Renaissance. Paul's mentors at Princeton have been studying the manuscript for decades and are obsessed by it but have been at an impasse for decades. During their final semester Paul enlists Tom's help (Tom's deceased father was also obsessed by the book) in decoding the test. With the help  of their roommates Charlie and Gil they become enmeshed in the mysterious murder of one of Paul's mentors.

A very intriguing novel in the same genre of Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code.
