García's saga follows the family of Celia and Jorge del Pino over 2/3's of a century but especially what happens to them after the Cuban Revolution.

One of their daughter's moves to New York right after the revolution, another stays in Cuba, and their son eventually moves to Croatia. It is a story of each of the family members as well as a story of the family as a whole and of the revolution. It depicts what the revolution did to families.

The book is written in the magical realism style.
