13—Girlchild by Tupelo Hassman

Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2012

Rory Dawn Hendrix, an especially bright girl, born on the wrong side of the tracks, tells the story of her life on the Calle in Reno, Nevada. Rory is the youngest and only daughter of an unwed mother whose first child was born when she was 15. Rory and her mother live in a double wide. Her mother is a night time bartender who leaves Rory in the care of a neighbor whose father sexually abuses her and Rory.

Rory has found an old version of the Girl Scout Handbook which she has read over and over and over and that book is the thread around which Rory's story is told.
