26—These Foolish Things by Deborah Moggach (aka The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel)

Chatto & Windus, 2004

The movie, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which was taken from this book is one of my favorites. I liked it so much I saw it twice. I also have enjoyed reading this novel. It's wonderfully written. The characters are well-drawn and the story is heartwarming. But the movie and book while alike are different.

In both, the characters are elderly people whose lifestyles and circumstances have changed and they are forced to move to India to stay at the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the elderly. They form friendships and become involved in each others' lives.

The characters in the movie are composites of the many characters in the book. In some instances the names were changed and events done by one character in the book were done by another in the movie.

In essence, the movie was distilled from the book and in and of itself is a wonderful cinematic treat. I recommend both.
