A novelized mémoire of the author's escape from Vietnam in 1975. Like the Ha (the main character and from whose perspective the story is told) Lai and her family ended up in Alabama. The story is of her last days in Vietnam and her first years in Alabama.
This book was a Newbery honor book in 2012.
