19—Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos

Farrar, Straus, Giroux, 2011

It's 1962, and our hero, Jack Gantos, is grounded for the summer on the first day of summer vacation. Seems he borrowed his father's Japanese war rifle(without permission) and fired it off. It was an accident, fortunately, no one was hurt, but Jack was grounded.

The only thing Jack can do is dig a big hole for the bomb shelter his father wants to build and help old Mrs. Volker write the obituaries for the elderly ladies, the original occupants of Norvelt, who seem to be dying at an alarming rate.

This book won the 2012 Newbery medal.
